Archaeological test trenching and metal detection were undertaken at the proposed development site at Cleristown South, Aughwilliam, Co. Wexford in advance of a proposed single-house development.
A total of four test trenches, with a combined length of approximately 63m, were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development, including the house site, entrance area and percolation area. The topsoil was also scanned using a metal detector during the course of works. Stratigraphic deposits across the site were consistent and comprised mid-brown silty clay topsoil directly overlying natural yellowish-brown to orange-brown silty clay subsoil, with occasional areas of exposed bedrock noted.
While the site is located within an archaeologically sensitive landscape and in proximity to the recorded sites of a church (WX041-037—-) and castle (WX041-038—-), no evidence for associated subsurface archaeological activity was identified within the footprint of the proposed development.
