A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken in advance of development at this site in south Co. Wexford, within the Zone of Notification for a ringfort (WX046-006). Two test trenches, measuring 19.5m in total length, were excavated to assess the potential impact of the proposed development, including the dwelling footprint, service routes and percolation area.
The stratigraphy encountered across the site indicated a high level of prior ground disturbance. Evidence for this included significant ground reduction, levelling and reworking associated with earlier construction activity. In several areas, the natural subsoil had been truncated, with bedrock exposed at or close to the present ground surface.
No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were identified in any of the test trenches. The results of testing indicate that the archaeological potential within the footprint of the proposed development has been substantially reduced as a result of previous disturbance.
