An archaeological assessment and test excavation were carried out in advance of a proposed residential development of 94 houses at Lissywollen, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. To investigate the archaeological potential of the site, eight test trenches were excavated across the proposed development area. The excavation revealed natural subsoil, modern agricultural drainage, areas of exposed bedrock and a small number of modern finds such as fragments of drainage pipe, crockery, bottles and a horseshoe. No archaeological features, structures, deposits or artefacts were discovered during the archaeological test excavation.
