2026:281 - Ballybeg and Ballynaneashagh, Waterford

Archaeological testing was undertaken in advance of a permitted large-scale Residential Development (LRD) at Cork Road, which is located in the townlands of Ballybeg and Ballynaneashagh, Co. Waterford. The western part of the development is slightly elevated and comprises rough pasture with occasional trees. It is separated from the eastern part of the development by a line of scrubby vegetation.

Testing was carried out over the course of six days from the 4 August 2026. A total of 24 trenches were excavated across the site measuring 3,780 linear metres. Trench 1, at the western edge of the development area, was not excavated as it would be a hindrance to the public area.

Testing revealed six small areas of archaeological potential, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas (AA1–6). These comprise six isolated pits of unknown date containing charcoal remains. A former field boundary and townland boundary cross the site and were partially identified in a number of trenches. However, the presence of extensive land drains to the south and an electrical cable associated with the old playing pitches in the north hampered positive identification in all trenches.
