Archaeological test-trenching was undertaken as part of a broader desk-based assessment support of a planning application for the proposed development of a new phase of housing. The testing was carried out at the pre-planning stage for a proposed development of 99 residential units over an area of approximately 4.1 hectares.
A total of eight test trenches were excavated across the proposed development site. Trenches 1–3 revealed significantly disturbed ground conditions, with the upper deposits consisting primarily of infilled material. No intact topsoil horizon was identified in these areas, indicating that the ground had been previously stripped during an earlier phase of housing development. In contrast, Trenches 4–8 were situated within a greenfield area and exhibited undisturbed soil profiles, unaffected by prior construction activity.
No archaeological features, deposits, or finds were identified in any of the excavated trenches.
