Archaeological monitoring of borehole drilling took place at a site at Caherabbey Lower, Cahir, Co. Tipperary. The site lies in the north portion of Cahir, within an existing oil depot, formerly Abbey Mills -corn (TS075-048005-), adjacent to and to the north of Cahir Abbey (Nat. Mon. 5950; TS075-048002-) located in the townland of Caherabbey Upper.
The works were carried out under Ministerial Consent C001535 (Excavation: E005935; Detection: R00808; Works: W000912) due to the proximity of the site to the religious house of Cahir Abbey. The borehole drilling was carried out for the purpose of environmental due diligence at an existing oil depot. A total of five boreholes, measuring c.0.2cm in diameter, were drilled, with the extracted core samples examined visually by the archaeologist, as well as being scanned with a metal detector to maximise find retrieval. All cores showed sterile deposits, ranging from stone and rubble to silty and sandy clays, which were above the bedrock geology at the site. None of the extracted cores showed any indication of archaeological material, and therefore the borehole drilling had no archaeological impact. As a result, the works had no archaeological impact, and no further mitigation is required.
