The project entailed the rehabilitation of approximately 1,026m of existing watermain between Springmount Water Treatment Plant and the N74 at Golden, Co. Tipperary. Initial assessment identified that the southern section of the scheme was within the Zone of Notification associated with a recorded tower house and bawn (TS060-096 and TS060-096001), and archaeological monitoring was therefore recommended for this section of the works.

The section requiring monitoring extended for approximately 147m along the western side of the road. The excavated trench was approximately 1m wide and up to 1.2m deep. Archaeological monitoring identified a sequence of modern road surfacing and construction material overlying natural sandy clay and gravel. Some areas of bedrock were also encountered. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were identified during the excavation works.
