Archaeological monitoring took place between 2 April and 10 July 2026 and involved continuous supervision of all excavation works. The trenches, excavated using an open-cut method, were examined as they progressed, with the exposed soil layers recorded. These works took place as 840m of water main was replaced along Castle Street, Church Street, Old Church Street and The Square. The excavations revealed ground conditions which were largely consistent across the scheme, although some local variations in modern road construction and service backfill were present. The trenches had been extensively disturbed by modern underground utilities, including water, drainage and other service installations. Occasional remains of 19th-century stone box drains were identified, but these had already been disturbed or partially removed during earlier utility works. No archaeological structures, deposits, artefacts or other features of archaeological significance were discovered during the monitoring programme.
