Archaeological monitoring of watermains upgrade from Clonmel Water Treatment Plant on behalf of Uisce Éireann took place between 23 September 2024 and 28 April 2026. The project entailed a total length of c. 11800m, with approximately 6500m on the R689 from Lisronagh to Davis Road; approximately 1500m on the R688 from Ard Gaoithe Business Park (Lawlesstown) to Frank Drohan Road; approximately 2800m on the L3204 from Rathronan to Rathduff Lower; with the remaining c. 1000m in greenfield area traversing Lawlesstown and Giantsgrave. Preceding archaeological impact assessment identified two sections subject to monitoring – Giantsgrave to Lawlesstown (1010m length from ITM 618697 625782 at east to 617925 626021 at west), and Rathronan (100m section on the existing public road centred on ITM 620433 625863).
Groundworks were archaeologically monitored, entailing archaeological supervision of topsoil stripping for the works corridor and the excavation of open-cut trenches. The work in Rathronan took place along a roadside, while the section between Giantsgrave and Lawlesstown involved stripping topsoil and trench excavation through fields.
No archaeology was encountered.
