A test excavation was carried out in an empty plot of land in the Gooseberry Lane and Cross Carrick area of Kells, Co. Meath. The test excavation was carried out over the course of one day in January 2026.

One test trench (21m in length) was excavated along the length of the site, east to west. The topsoil had an average depth of 0.4m, but it was deeper at the eastern end of the trench, as there was made-up/disturbed ground here, which was dug into at a deeper depth than the rest of the trench. Modern plastic and other debris were found in this area. The base natural was a compact, light to mid-orangish-brown silt clay with frequent small subangular stones.

No archaeological features or artefacts were found on the site during the test excavation.
