Aisling Collins and Jason Bolton conducted an archaeological survey of the exposed stonework on the western and northern walls of the south-west turret, acting on behalf of the client, the Sisters of St Louis, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

These activities form part of Community Monuments Fund-funded conservation and repair works at the castle, which is registered as an archaeological monument (Ref. No. LH007-118001, Record of Monuments and Places).

After the removal of the cement render from the west elevation of the south-west tower of Bellew’s Castle by the contractor, Nolans, an archaeological and photographic survey of the newly exposed masonry walls was conducted. The use of a scaffolding tower allowed for comprehensive documentation of the castle’s entire height, from roof level down to the ground.

Note – The survey began at the top of the structure on the upper floor of the scaffold, designated as Level 1 for reporting purposes, with Level 10 corresponding to ground level.

A cloud survey was also undertaken by Murphy geospatial in November 2025, but the photographic survey provided more detail, so it was not included in this report.

The results of this survey were collated into a report.
