A programme of archaeological testing was undertaken at Askeaton, County Limerick, as part of the proposed Askeaton Wastewater Treatment System Upgrade. This assessment has been carried out to ascertain the potential impact of the development of the WwTP site on the archaeological resource that may exist within the site. It was undertaken by Barry Lacey and Ewelina Rondelez of IAC Archaeology (IAC), on behalf of Uisce Éireann and under an extension to licence 25E0616, as issued by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DoHLGH).
Test trenching commenced at the proposed WwTP site on 16 March 2026 and continued for four days. A total of 25 trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area, which measured c. 1,600 linear metres in total. Testing was undertaken within the WwTP site due to the fact it is a large-scale greenfield site that has the potential to contain previously unrecorded archaeological remains. Testing was not carried out within the footprint of the scheme where it is confined to the existing road network.
No archaeological features, deposits, or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified in any of the test trenches. A number of non-archaeological features were identified during the course of the works including a former field boundary, features associated with modern agricultural activity and land management, agricultural furrows indicative of mechanised ploughing and representing relatively recent agricultural activity, modern drainage or land improvement features and modern disturbance.
