Archaeological monitoring of borehole drilling took place at a site located at Fiddown, Co. Kilkenny. The site lies on the northern banks of the River Suir, and to the east of road R698, which incorporates Fiddown Bridge (NIAH 12327009) and c. 19m southwest of Fiddown Church (RMP: KK041-001003-, NIAH: 12327007). The works were carried out under a Section 12 notification, with recommendations from the National Monuments Service (Reference: NM08637). The borehole drilling was carried out for the purpose of environmental due diligence at an existing oil depot located on the northern bank of the River Suir.
A total of four boreholes, measuring c.0.2m in diameter, were drilled, with the extracted core samples examined visually by the archaeologist, as well as being scanned with a metal detector to maximise find retrieval. All cores showed sterile deposits, ranging from stone and rubble directly below the modern concrete
surface, with mid-brown and mid-grey silty riverine deposits below.
None of the extracted cores showed any indication of archaeological material, and therefore the borehole drilling had no archaeological impact. As a result, the works had no archaeological impact, and no further mitigation is required.
