Archaeological monitoring took place of excavation works for the change of use of a former restaurant (La Rustica) to two self-contained dwellings for use as short-let holiday accommodation. Works will include new sash windows, demolition of ancillary structures and construction of single-storey extensions to side and rear, solar PV panels and rooflights to rear roof, and associated site works at Northgate Street, Athenry, Co. Galway.

The works are located within GA084-001–, the historic town of Athenry.

The monitoring was being carried out in response to a planning condition. Very little excavation was required for the works. Two small pits were excavated using a jackhammer followed by hand-digging. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout consisting of cement/leamix over a mixed deposit of rubble and general modern builders’ rubble to a depth of roughly 300mm. In the course of minor interventions required for internal reconfigurations/re-fitting no earlier building fabric was observed. No architectural fragments or objects of archaeological or architectural significance wre noted during the course of the works. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
