A test excavation was carried out in March 2026 on a site at Turnpike Lane, off Lower Drumcondra Road. The site consisted of an overgrown, empty patch of land. Three trenches were excavated across the site, with a total length of 67.4m.
There was a deep layer of topsoil on the site, ranging in depth from 0.6m to 0.9m. Modern ceramic and other debris were mixed into this layer of topsoil. Under the topsoil were a couple of shallower layers. C4 was a layer of grey gravel present in the eastern part of the site in the area of Trench 3. C3 was a brown clay present across the site in Trenches 1, 2 and 3. It contained modern ceramic and other debris. The natural ground was a compact, mid-yellowish-brown clay with occasional small subangular stones.
No archaeological features or artefacts were found in any of the trenches.
