2026:275 - Scart, Kildorrery, Cork

An archaeological test excavation was undertaken at the location of a single house site located to the immediate north of a levelled ringfort (CO018-050) in Scart townland near Kildorrery village. Eight test trenches were excavated and recorded including one along the southern site boundary where there was some potential that the northern circuit of the ringfort ditch may have been exposed. Testing revealed that the north side of the development site had been subjected to considerable disturbance since the early 20th century due to quarrying and the subsequent backfilling of the quarry hole with modern domestic household waste. An undisturbed soil profile was exposed at the southern side of the proposed development and no trace of the northern circuit
of the ringfort ditch was exposed during testing.

Based on the results of the test excavation, it was clear that no archaeological features were present at the site proposed for development and it was recommended that no further archaeological mitigation was required.
