A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken as part of site investigations for a proposed development in the townland of Kilknockan, Co. Cork. Test trenching was carried out as part of a response to a Request for Further Information received from Cork County Council in relation to a proposed development at the site.
The testing site is located between the N20 national road (to the east) and the L92004 local road (to the west) and covers approximately 1.45 hectares. The eastern part of the site was formerly an auto sales premises with concrete yards and oil storage tanks. Medium and high-pressure gas mains were identified along the eastern boundary, and this area was thus partly excluded from the test-trenching programme. The remaining area available for test trenching largely comprised a 0.95ha field with a steep slope downward to the now-diverted ‘Hospital Stream’ which forms the eastern boundary of the field and now flows in an artificial drainage channel.
The fieldwork was undertaken on 9 July 2026. A total of approximately 530 linear metres of testing in 11 test trenches were excavated. All trenches were excavated under continuous archaeological supervision to the level of the natural subsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was identified in any trench.
