A programme of archaeological test-trenching of geophysical anomalies as well as a sample of the remainder of the application area was undertaken in the Townlands of Nettleville Demesne (E543000, N571950), Mahallagh (E543000, N571950), Shandangan West (E540900, N569500) and Shandangan East (E541720, N569400) County Cork in association with the development of a proposed solar farm at Nettleville.
The geophysical survey and archaeological testing were undertaken as part of a pre-planning application. The programme of archaeological testing comprised the excavation of 113 trenches. These trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains.
Test trenching was undertaken at four locations (Areas 1–4). All of the areas contained archaeology:
Area 1 (Mahallagh and Nettleville Demesne): four fulachtaí fiadh.
Area 2 (Shandangan West): four fulachtaí fiadh, four pits and two deposits.
Area 3 (Shandangan East): a single fulacht fiadh.
Area 4 (Shandangan East): seven fulachtaí fiadh.
