Targeted archaeological testing was undertaken to investigate a linear geophysical anomaly previously interpreted as a possible relict field boundary. Two test areas were excavated.
Testing in Area A exposed three shallow north–south linear features. These were filled with topsoil, were relatively insubstantial and corresponded with the orientation of the present field layout, indicating that they represent modern agricultural features. These account for the linear response recorded during the geophysical survey and the feature identified during an earlier programme of archaeological testing.
Testing in Area B identified a single substantial north–south linear feature cutting an introduced deposit containing modern ceramic, metal and glass. The feature was filled with sterile gravel and stone-rich material, from which a single fragment of modern pottery was recovered. Its stratigraphic relationship and composition indicate that it represents a modern drainage feature associated with agricultural ground improvement. This feature also corresponds with the geophysical anomaly and the non-archaeological linear feature identified during the earlier testing programme.
No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were identified within either test area. The geophysical anomaly investigated is therefore interpreted as being of modern, non-archaeological origin.
