A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken at Ballinrea, Carrigaline, Co. Cork from 1–5 December 2025. These works were undertaken for
Ørsted by Rubicon Archaeology Limited in relation to a proposed Battery Energy Storage System relating to Ballinrea Solar Farm.
Geophysical survey involving high resolution magnetic was carried out by Dr Ger Dowling under Licence No. 24R0436. Only two anomalies of potential archaeological significance were identified. The survey also revealed evidence of agricultural activity including plough furrows and potential relict field boundaries, some 0f which were identifiable on the early cartographic sources.
The programme of testing comprised of 12 trenches excavated within the footprint of the Proposed Development to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains. The trench layout was arranged to target identified geological features.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified. Linear agricultural features such as lazy bed furrows, plough furrows and field boundaries were observed across all areas.
