2026:020 - Smithstown, Clare

Archaeological testing was undertaken as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment for a development within the Smithstown Industrial Estate, Shannon, County Clare.  Archaeological monitoring of six geotechnical site investigation pits was also completed at the site.  The testing involved the excavation of nine linear trenches ranging in length from 30-70m throughout the site. An undisturbed peat layer c. 2m deep was located in the north-west of the site. Elsewhere the general stratigraphy suggested that much of the site had previously been disturbed with fill material in the areas immediately surrounding the existing development and topsoil stripped from other areas. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were uncovered in the course of monitoring and testing.
