The development, located some 3.5 km northwest of Loughgall and 2.8 km southeast of Charlemount, consists of the demolition of the existing storage building and
offices, and the erection of a replacement storage unit, with offices and associated site works and the erection of a storage unit. In their considerations of the applications Historic Environment Division – Historic Monuments (HED HM) were content that the proposal satisfied PPS 6 policy requirements, subject to conditions for the agreement and implementation of a developer-funded programme of archaeological works.
Following the granting of an archaeological license on foot of an agreed archaeological programme of works, an issue arose which required the opening of a test trench, to examine the nature of the subsurface ground conditions and depth and nature of the ‘made ground’ overburden.
Following agreement to vary the original archaeological programme of works with both HED Planning and HED-Licensing, a test trench was opened in the south-east corner of the site in order to expose the nature and extent of the subsurface deposits, under the existing license.
The small area tested revealed up to 2m of archaeological deposits overlying the natural subsoil. Within these deposits significant evidence was uncovered of the mill complex, elements of which were in existence in the early years of the 19th century, still surviving below the present concrete yards which surround the upstanding buildings.
Development works have been paused.
