Archaeological monitoring works were carried out in the course of initial
conservation works at Carrick Castle, WM011-012—-, Co. Westmeath between September and November 2025. Due to the precarious state of the structure an initial programme of stabilization works were proposed to ensure safe access into the castle and onto the vault. The works consisted of removal of large boulders which had been placed in the north-west doorway to prevent cattle access, clearance of surface stone from within and around the castle, erection of a crash deck in the interior of the castle, erection of external scaffolding to the north west wall and preparatory works in advance of vegetation clearance.
No ground disturbance took place in the course of the works, with scaffolding and crash deck erected on timber pads and concrete blocks respectively. No dressed stone was noted in the stone clearance and no disturbance to the wall fabric occurred in the initial phase of vegetation clearance.
Stabilization works took place in and above the north-west doorway.
Nothing of additional archaeological interest was noted in the course of the monitoring works.
