The development is situated in the townland of Kilmacthomas, on the eastern periphery of the town of Kilmacthomas. The site lies within the grounds of the former Convent of Mercy, built between 1842 and 1905. A burial ground associated with the convent is situated to the immediate northwest of the proposed development site. A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken intermittently and no archaeological deposits or features were identified.
