Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) was engaged to undertake archaeological monitoring of proposed boundary treatment works, and subsequent excavation of features exposed during monitoring, at the Strand Hill development in Crobally Upper townland, Tramore, County Waterford.

The boundary treatment comprised the mechanical removal, under archaeological supervision, of the existing boundary ditch that defined the south-west boundary of the development site (Area B). The boundary consisted of a bank and hedgerow c.110m in length and 4.5m wide, situated alongside the existing laneway known as Stranger’s Lane, which included the preserved remains of the western extent of the enclosure ditch and associated features (WA026-094—, Enclosure) within an area measuring 38m x 4.5m. The work follows on from extensive previous archaeological investigations between 2020 and 2024 (see Coyne 2020b:399; Fegan & Kenny 2024:827; Salinas forthcoming [2024]).

The excavation was an extension to that of the circular enclosure excavated in 2024 (Licence: 24E0081), and results comprised the continuation of the ringfort enclosure ditches, one interior pits and three post-holes. The remaining 4% of the ringfort continues beyond the western boundary of the development under the tarmac road of Stranger’s Lane.

Further archaeological monitoring of boundary works adjacent to Spring Farm is still outstanding.
