A total of 45 test trenches with a combined length of 2477m were excavated as part of the archaeological evaluation for a proposed pipeline route within the townlands of Loughmacrory and Altdrumman, at Loughmacrory, County Tyrone.
The investigation identified a single area of archaeological activity which was further stripped of topsoil allowing for 10m buffer around each potential feature. The area of activity comprised nine archaeological and potential features including pits, a possible kiln and post-/stake-holes, of which several exhibited high concentrations of charcoal and clear evidence of burning. Following consultation with DfC:HED it was agreed that the appropriate mitigation for these features was preservation in situ. The identified features were subsequently preserved in situ under archaeological supervision, with protective measures implemented to ensure their protection for the duration of the development works. The remaining tested areas of the proposed development displayed consistent evidence of agricultural use, such as plough marks, furrows, and field drains, alongside occasional modern disturbances including landfill, buried waste and construction debris.
