Archaeological impact assessment, visual impact assessment and archaeological test excavation was carried out for the redevelopment of a commercial garage and car sales to a new commercial garage and car sales as a business expansion. The site was situated between an excavated settlement (Byrine, 2008, E002491) to one side and a settlement, tower-house, church, graveyard and excavated setlement cluster to the other (TN042-052 – TN042052-006, 14E0184, Coughlan, 2016).
A ringwork castle (TN042-052003) was partially trucated by the site of redevelopment in the mid-20th century.
While the impact assessment identified a potential for impacts upon archaeology to a moderate to high level of significance, the visual impact assessment identified no negative impacts by the development, princiapllay due to the extant previous structures and the test excavtion which identified that the 20th-century development had removed all original upper soil stratigraphy. As a consequence no archaeology survivied on the site. It was therefore recommended to proceed with no further archaeological excavation.
