Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) was engaged by Tipperary County Council to carry out Stage (i) archaeological monitoring of the Fr Mathew Street Road Improvement Scheme. The scheme is located in Knockanrawley, Gortavalla, (Part of) Spital-Land, Carrownreddy, Brodeen, Rathsasseragh, Garranacanty and Corrogemore townlands in Tipperary Town, Co. Tipperary, and comprises sections of the N24 and N74 National Roads.

The scope of the development involves the upgraded road layout with reduced carriageway width (approximately 6m along Fr Mathew Street); widened footways with new paving along N74 Fr Mathew Street, including new footways between James Connelly Park and St Michael’s Avenue (West), and between St Michael’s Avenue (East) and St Michael’s Cemetery car park; upgraded car park at St Michael’s Cemetery with new pavement, defined spaces and improved pedestrian and vehicle access from N74 Fr Mathew Street; new road pavement, upgraded public lighting along N74 Fr Mathew Street, localised drainage upgrades, enhanced soft and hard landscaping, including the provision of upgraded street furniture and new town gateway signage at the existing 60kph speed limit on N74 Fr Mathew Street.

A Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment Report, prepared for the scheme in 2015, identified no known archaeological and architectural sites were impacted by the works.

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on an intermittent basis throughout 2024 as required. Site inspections were carried out on 15 May and 27 November 2024. No archaeological objects or features of archaeological significance were found during the monitoring of groundworks in 2024. Works is intermittent and ongoing until April 2025.
