It is proposed to apply for planning permission to construct a development of 74 residential units, consisting of 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroomed houses, access roads, services, landscaping and all associated ground works on a site in Carrownanty, Ballymote, Co. Sligo.
Although no sites of Cultural Heritage interest were known from the proposed development area, it was possible that construction activity in the form of ground works, service lines and access roads could impact on as yet unknown subsurface archaeological deposits, which might survive across the largely greenfield development site.
In order to assess the nature, date and extent of any such deposits, it was recommended that a phase of archaeological testing take place to cover the footprint of the development. On 28 and 29 July 2025, 19 machine-dug test trenches were opened up across the entirety of the proposed development area, with nothing of archaeological significance uncovered.
