The archaeological pre-development testing at the proposed development site in the townlandof Carrownderry, Co. Roscommon involved the excavation of 4 test trenches. The site is located at the rear of an existing dwelling in a field of pasture and is located 13m to the southeast of the Zone of Notification of Recorded Monument – RO045-149—-(ringfort).
Test trenches A and B revealed the sod and topsoil overlying the natural and the remnant north-south running field boundary. This field boundary is marked on the historic OSi mapping, the 25-inch map and the last edition 6-inch map. Aerial photographs indicate this field boundary was removed prior to the 1995 OSi aerial photographs. The archaeological test excavations revealed the remnant field boundary (0.6m in width and 0.3m in depth) was constructed of stone and earth and contained decayed stake posts. No features and/or finds of archaeological significance were encountered during the course of the archaeological test trenching.
