Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Programme Gurteen, Cloonfad is located in a rural area approximately 1.2km northwest of the village of Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon. The scheme involved the installation of 2,831m of new water mains along the existing road network and the decommissioning of 2,650m of existing water main. The construction technique used was directional drilling.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Assessment (CHSA) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions. The CHSA found that the scheme traverses the Record of Monuments and Places constraints zone and Zone of Notification for a ringfort-rath (RO032-030—-). The proposed route also intersects a possible clachan (i.e., former settlement) along the western portion of the scheme as seen in the first-edition six-inch Ordnance Survey map (1838). The CHSA recommended monitoring within the RMP constraints zone and Zone of Notification of RO032-030—- and 20m either side for a total of c.197m and in the vicinity of a potential well and 20m either side, for a total of c.41m.
A site inspection in the area of a possible clachan was undertaken on 9 April 2025 and archaeological monitoring of the groundworks was carried out between 11 and 16 April 2025.
The excavation of access pits to facilitate directional drilling installation method located along a country by-road within the constraints zone for the ringfort-rath (RO032-030—-) was monitored. No access pits were excavated in the vicinity of the potential well. No potential structures were noted within the area of the possible clachan.
No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were found during the monitoring.
