Archaeological testing was required in advance of the proposed construction of a house at Oldcastle, Swinford, Co. Mayo. Although the proposed development will not directly impact the recorded monument (MA 061-123), part of the proposed house site lies within the Zone of Notification associated with the monument and was therefore subject to archaeological testing.
Following consultation with the Department, it was agreed that an exclusion zone would be established to prevent machinery from approaching the monument. A fence, accompanied by appropriate signage, was erected to delineate the exclusion zone and will remain in place throughout the construction phase.
No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were identified during the testing.
