2025:744 - Chapel Lane, Claremorris, Mayo

Archaeological testing was undertaken at Chapel Lane, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, in connection with a proposed housing development.

The original testing strategy proposed that only Phase 1 of the development area would be subject to archaeological testing. However, at the client’s request, the scope of the testing was extended to include both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the field.

During testing in Phase 2, a fulacht fia was identified in the south-eastern corner of the field, at ITM coordinates 534491, 774782. This will not be impacted by the proposed works associated with Phase 1. Should Phase 2 proceed, an appropriate archaeological mitigation strategy for the fulacht fia can be agreed with the relevant authorities in advance of any further works.
