2025:729 - Mullenmore North 4, Crossmolina, Mayo

Excavation at Mullenmore North 4 was undertaken as part of the River Deel (Crossmolina) Flood Relief Scheme, Archaeological Consultancy Services Contract. The excavation was carried out on behalf of, and funded by, the Office of Public Works.

The excavated features at Mullenmore North 4 comprised of a burnt mound with associated wood-lined trough.

The trough was located in the north-east of the excavation area, lying north of the main mound and cut into peat, C006. This was rectangular in plan, orientated east–west with rounded corners. It measured 2.24m long, 1.29m wide and 0.32m deep. Break of slope at the top was sharp with vertical sides. Break of slope at the bottom was sharp with a flat base that sloped down to the east. A moss lining (C017) was located along the east, west and south sides of the trough. This lay against the cut. Stratigraphically above this was wood lining C016. This was constructed from 25 wood elements of worked corner pegs, posts, side planks, and end planks at the eastern end. There were no planks at the western end.

Burnt mounds see a height of use in the Bronze Age, with lower numbers recorded in the Late Neolithic and Iron Age. Due to preservation conditions this site will provide significant environmental material for post-excavation analysis.
