Excavation at Mullenmore North 1 and 2 was undertaken as part of the River Deel (Crossmolina) Flood Relief Scheme, Archaeological Consultancy Services Contract. The excavation was carried out on behalf of, and funded by, the Office of Public Works.

The excavated features at Mullenmore North 1 (MN1) comprised the remains of a burnt mound situated on a steep slope, with two associated pits. At Mullenmore North 2 (MN2) three undiagnostic pits were excavated. Radiocarbon dating of select samples will aid in determining the date range for the activities at both MN1 and MN2, once Stage (iv) post-excavation analysis is complete. However, it is expected that the burnt mound activity at MN1 will be prehistoric in date, between the Late Neolithic and Iron Age.
