The proposed house is located within the Zone of Notification for the watermill (MA 061 – 074); due to this it was recommended that ground works were to be archaeologically monitored as there maybe the remains of the mill race as indicated
on the historic maps. The protected and extant mill is to be retained in its present state.
Testing was carried out in January 2024. A copy of the report was sent to the local planning authority whereupon archaeological monitoring was recommended after a review. A licence extension was requested and the subsequent monitoring took place in November 2024.
During the monitoring of the ground works the mill race (culvert) in front of the 1950’s house was uncovered as were other artefacts associated with the mill (grinding stones) all of which are retained safely at the site. Three mill stones or grinding stones were found resting on top of the mill race confined to the western section of the site; presumably the landowner took the mill stones down and covered the top of the mill race during the construction of the 1950’s-style house (now removed).

The area where the mill race was found is liable to flood, therefore it was proposed in agreement with the NMS and the local planning authority to fully expose the stones on top of the mill race. Once fully recorded the stones were removed and a drainage pipe was inserted into the mill channel as agreed. All artefacts associated with the mill race are carefully retained at the site. A complete photographic record was maintained throughout the work. A full detailed report will be sent to the Department of Housing and Local Government and the Local Planning Authority once the work is complete. This report contains the results from the works at the location of the mill race.
