Aisling Collins and Jason Bolton conducted an archaeological survey of the exposed stonework on the western and northern walls of the south-west turret, acting on behalf of the client, the Sisters of St. Louis, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

These activities form part of CMF-funded conservation and repair works at the castle, which is registered as an archaeological monument (Ref. No. LH007-118001, Record of Monuments and Places).

After the removal of the cement render, both an archaeological and photographic survey of the newly exposed walls was conducted. The use of a scaffolding tower allowed for comprehensive documentation of the castle’s entire height, from roof level down to the ground. The survey has been collated into:

Background: In January 2024, Dr. Jason Bolton completed an Archaeological Impact Assessment. The removal of cement render was monitored by Aisling Collins, while Murphy Geospatial Ltd carried out a comprehensive measured photographic survey. The findings were documented as compliant with CMF grant requirements (CMF24-1-LH004).
