Louth County Council carried out road improvement works in the form of new pedestrian pavements, on the south side of Strand Road, Termonfeckin running some 500m eastwards from the junction with the main Drogheda – Termonfeckin road. Due to the fact that the works were within the zone of archaeological potential associated with Termonfeckin, LH022-041—-, licensed archaeological monitoring was undertaken.
Phase 1, the eastern half of the scheme, commenced in January 2025 and ran for 250m along the south side of the road. Phase 2, again some 250m in length, linked in with the west end of Phase 1 and ran to the junction with Main Street. This second phase commenced in March 2025
Monitoring of the two phases of works associated with the road improvements to the Strand Road, did not uncover anything of significant archaeological interest. A short section of stone-built culvert was noted at the east end of Phase 2. It was very badly truncated with only a maximum of 2m or so surviving and the fact that red brick was noted in its construction suggests a relatively late date. Elsewhere, the previous insertion of roadside services and the construction of property boundaries had caused significant disturbance and where undisturbed ground was noted, this proved to consist of natural glacial subsoils.
