Two test trenches (18 linear metres) were excavated at a site at Rooskey Road, Liberties, Carlingford, Co Louth on 27 March.
There are no recorded archaeological sites within the proposed development area; however Religious house – Knights Templars (LH008-018001) and Souterrain (LH008-018002) are located in the field immediately adjacent to the northeast. The Zones of Archaeological Potential surrounding these RMP sites overlaps with the testing area. No evidence of these RMPs was recorded during the investigation. Waterlogged layer C6 in Trench 2 could be as a result of proximity to the now-infilled and levelled stream which was noted on historical mapping and aerial photography. Finally, the area was found to have been heavily disturbed in the recent past with the construction of a farmyard in the late 90s/early 2000s, its subsequent demolition and the construction of a private dwelling nearby.
There were no archaeological features or artefacts recorded during the test trenching.
