The site lies at 62-63 Trinity Street, to the west of and outside the medieval town of Drogheda. Archaeological testing in advance of proposed development at this site involved excavation of two test trenches in the footprint of the development, totalling 36 linear metres of trench. Garden soil was evident in the northern part of the site,
an area that was not developed as indicated by cartographic evidence. Further south a deep rubble fill mixed with clay was evident and this possibly represents demolition material from previous structures and buildings on the site. An L—shaped concreted wall foundation set in hardcore was evident at the southern limit of Trench 2 in an area where buildings are evident on the 1907 25-inch OS map. These buildings that probably dated to the turn of the last century were subsequently demolished. Natural comprised a yellow/orange boulder clay to the north and a grey/orange sandy clay further south and varied in depth from 0.7m at the north to 1.6m further south. No archaeological features were exposed or identified, and no finds were recovered. The
testing is now complete, and no further archaeological work is required in the northern part of the site.
However, the southern part of the site could not be tested due to the presence of buildings. It is recommended therefore, that this part of the site is subject to archaeological monitoring post-demolition.
