Archaeological monitoring associated with repair works for a collapsed section of riverside wall was undertaken at Aghalacka townland, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. The licensed monitoring was undertaken in accordance with a Section 12 (3) Notification submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Monitoring was conducted over several days in September 2025. Initially, the collapsed rubble stone was removed from the river at low tide and stored separately for inspection. Subsequently, an area measuring 13m by 1m of reinforced concrete yard surface was broken out, and the underlying infill of rubble and clay was removed to a depth of 1.8m. This material was visually examined for artefacts and scanned using a metal detector.
Apart from some modern ferrous debris, no finds of archaeological significance were recovered. The underlying deposits consisted predominantly of introduced rubble set in a mid-brown clay matrix. No cut limestone masonry or other dressed stone was identified among the collapsed wall material.
