A two-day programme of archaeological testing was conducted in February 2025, following on from a previous geophysical survey report carried out by Ger Dowling in November 2024 (Dowling 2024, Licence No 24R0558). The site was situated in rough pasture c. 75m south of the River Shannon, and c. 50–100m southwest of Castletroy Castle (LI006-017001).
The trenches targeted geophysical anomalies and open green space in order to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. Testing did not reveal anything of archaeological significance, however it did confirm the presence of some anomalies suggested by the geophysical survey which related to agricultural activity across the area and included a large quarry pit, linear gullies and a floor surface associated with demolished farm buildings.
It is possible, however, given the riverside location and proximity to medieval settlement, that small-scale or isolated archaeological features or deposits have the potential to survive beneath the current ground level and outside of the footprint of the excavated trenches.
