Full planning permission was granted for the installation of an onsite sewerage system with polishing filter in accordance with EPA code of practice 2021 to service an existing dwelling house and all ancillary works at Greaghnafarna Drumahaire BY Killanummery ED, Dromahaire, Co Leitrim. The site lay within the zone of archaeological potential established around Recorded Monument LE014A003—-, a well-preserved ringfort. Although there were no known archaeological features or deposits associated with the monument within the red line boundary of the subject site, the proposed ground works could have impacted on as yet unknown features. The insertion of the treatment percolation system in an area of largely undisturbed ground to the south of the existing cottage could have impacted on subsurface archaeological deposits should they have survived.
Monitoring of the groundworks around the existing cottage revealed extensive disturbance associated with the original construction of the cottage and additional ground leveling, presumably associated with the development of concrete yards around the site. The large lumps of concrete uncovered in the service pipeline trench opened at the south end of the cottage are associated with this leveling and yard construction.
The only feature noted in the monitoring of the percolation area was agricultural in nature, consisting of the shallow remains of a cultivation furrow, the slight surface remains of which were noted in the original walkover survey.
