The development is partially within the Zon of Notification to the north of the Medieval Town. The ground was very uneven and restricted with infilled material, sewer pipes, manhole inspection chambers, bushes and young trees to the south, but every effort was made to try and excavate clean straight trenches as outlined in the method statement. Previous results from the testing under licence 17E0073 showed the ground to have up to 1m of infill material which covered 2.3m depth of peat. The conclusion was that after the removal of the topsoil all soil material above the natural peat appears to have been excavated out and replaced by more modern gravel fill. A layer of peat which underlay the topsoil is naturally occurring and covers the site extensively. No artefacts of archaeological significance or environmental evidence were revealed during the test trenching.
