2025:236 - Ballynamoney, Carrick-on-Shannon, Leitrim

This development site has been the subject of two previous phases of archaeological assessment (Read 2005, 05E0852 and McHugh 2020, 20E0688), neither of which identified any archaeological features within the development site. The current phase of monitoring was undertaken in February and March 2025. The area at the northeast of the site was considered the most archaeologically sensitive owing to its location adjacent to monument LE031-003. Archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in this area failed to identify any archaeological features or finds and there was no trace of the ringfort fosse or any of the faint features identified in aerial imagery.
Archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping across the remainder of the site failed to identify any archaeological features, deposits or finds. A buffer zone has been established and appropriately fenced around monument LE031-003 which lies along the north-east boundary adjacent to the site. The proposed development will have no archaeological impact, and the monument lies outside the development area.
