Test excavation was undertaken at Ballyadams Quarry, Athy, Co. Laois. A total of 10 trenches measuring 858 linear metres were excavated in the course of the works. Trenches were placed to investigate anomalies noted in a geophysical survey (23R0308) and the wider subject area. Works were undertaken from 11-12 February 2025.

The topsoil/plough soil across the site measured 0.15-0.5m deep depending on location and comprised mid-brown friable silty clay. The natural subsoil varied across the site and comprised orange-brown compact clay and yellow-brown stoney clay. Bedrock was visible in Trenches 6, 7, 8 & 9.

Trenches were placed to investigate geophysical anomalies. In all cases these were deemed to be natural subsoil or bedrock variation.

Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded in the course of the archaeological investigations at Ballyadams Quarry.
