Condition 6 of the Grant of Planning with respect to the construction of a rear extension to a residence and a wastewater treatment system to the front at ‘Hawthorn Hill’, Broadleas Commons, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare required that all site preparation and ground reduction works be monitored by an archaeologist.
The south-eastern extent of the overall site is positioned within the RMP Zone and SMR Zone of Notification established for a ringfort – rath (SMR No: KD029-033); only partial remains of the monument are extant, comprising an overgrown broad, earthen bank with a shallow outer fosse element from south-southeast through west to north and acting as a field boundary.
All topsoil stripping required of the development, together with the excavation of the archaeologically sterile subsoil by up to 0.3m, was undertaken.
No subsurface features of archaeological interest or potential were uncovered, and no artefacts of archaeological/historical interest were recovered, by the works.
