A total of 19 test trenches were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 1374m of linear trenches were excavated. The topsoil ranged from a very wet peat to a silty clay. The natural varied from a grey gravel to a soft white silt.
Trenches 20 to 24 were not excavated as there will be no planting or development in that area. In several of the trenches, the depth of the trench exceeded 1m (reached a depth of 3m in places) through soft, wet peat. The sides of the trenches were vulnerable and prone to collapse, therefore, it was decided for safety reasons not to excavate the trenches beyond a depth of 1m.
A total of three features were recorded. Two truncated burnt spreads (C3 and C4) were identified in Trench 12. These corresponded with anomalies identified in the geophysical survey. C3 measured 2.9m northwest by southeast by 1.9m and consisted of black silty clay with oxidised orange and yellow stones.
C4 measured 7m north to south by 1.65m and consisted of black silty clay with oxidised orange and yellow stones. C4 appears to have been disturbed by a furrow of the track of a machine.
C5 was identified in the centre of Trench 9. It measured 10.5m east to west by 11.5m. It comprised dark brown silty clay with oxidised white and orange stone. It lay immediately beneath the grass.
