The proposed development at St. Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare, Co. Kildare consists of a 28m long pipeline within the grounds of the cathedral connecting to an existing 90PE-80 75mbar main outside the grounds of the cathedral.

The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Kildare (KD022-029--) and is located within the grounds of, and within the zone of notification for Kildare Cathedral (KD022-029002--). There are numerous recorded monuments associated with the cathedral and within the grounds.

The pipeline route was excavated from the southeast to the north through the eastern entrance to the abbey grounds out onto Market Square in Kildare connecting to an existing gas mains just outside the cathedral entrance. The 28m long pipeline within the grounds of the cathedral connected to an existing 90PE-80 75mbar main outside the grounds of the cathedral. The works were all open-cut and approx. 600mm deep.  The stratigraphy was consistent throughout, consisting of Tarmac overlying a deposit of rubble with frequent inclusions of red brick and sand. There were frequent services encountered. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
