A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken to facilitate conservation repairs to Killogilleen Church, Killogilleen townland, Co. Galway in accordance with Consent No.(s) C001480-W000847-E005876.

Works commenced on 29 September 2025 and were carried out intermittently until 10 November 2025.

Killogilleen Church is a recorded monument (RMP GA104-148004). The requirement for archaeological monitoring arose from consultation with the National Monuments Service, who advised that a Section 14 Ministerial Consent Application was required to facilitate the proposed works.

The works comprised:
• removal of unwanted vegetation to facilitate the repairs;
• masonry and mortar repairs to address ongoing loss of mortar and the potential structural failure of the internal relieving arch above the east gable lancet window;
• masonry and mortar repairs to address ongoing loss of mortar and potential structural failure at the north-east corner and the base of the external façade
• a programme of mortar consolidation, grouting, and re-pointing on the east external façade to slow further deterioration caused by general weather exposure;
• a programme of consolidation and mortar capping along the top of the east gable wall to slow further deterioration caused by general weather exposure.

No archaeological objects or architectural fragments were observed during the monitoring of the works. The removal of vegetation allowed for a more detailed photographic and drawing record of the east external gable to be created (Killigolleen-East-facing Gable) as per condition of the Ministerial Consent.
